RICHARD ALTON OBITUARY.
Richard Alton died on Monday, March 24th, 1902, at the age of 77 years. Born in Ireland on February 15th, 1825. Settled in New York State and moved to Hartford in 1885. Conducted the Alton House with his brother, Michael. He served in Co. I, 29th Wisconsin Regt. and transferred to Company A, 14th Wisconsin Regt. Was discharged from Civil War Service on October 8th, 1865. Married July 4th, 1870 to Mrs. Hannah Towles of West Granville. 4 children survive: George and Charles, Hartford; Mrs. C. E. Culver of Junction City, Wisconsin. Buried at the South Side Cemetery with Rev. J. H. Hicks officiating.

RICHARD ALTON, AN OLD RESIDENT PASSES AWAY
Richard Alton died at his home in the Second ward Monday evening, March 24, aged 77 years, one month and nine days. He had been in poor health for years, and confined for the most part to the house. When about six years old he had a severe attack of measles which left him with a weak throat and a cough which he never outgrew. His army life did considerable to aggravate this trouble and weaken his constitution, so that he was never able to do any hard work. For some time his eyesight had failed him, so that he was quite cut off from outside interests. A number of days ago his cough grew worse and developed into pneumonia which caused his death.
The family came to America some time in the early forties and settled in Jefferson county, N.Y., where they resided about ten years, and then came to Milwaukee. Two years later he came to Hartford.
Mr. Alton was a veteran of the civil war, enlisting in the spring of 1861, in Co. B. of the first regiment to leave this state. This enlistment was for three months, and when his time was out he came home, and when Co., I, of the 20th Wis. was organized here, he again enlisted, but was afterwards transferred to Co., A, of the 14th, under Capt. Chas. Williams. He thus served almost continuously throughout the war, and was mustered out at Mobile, Oct 9, 1866. On his return to Hartford, he made his home at the hotel with brother Michael until his marriage.
He was married at West Granville July 4, 1870 to Hannah D. Mead. Their home has always been in Hartford. Surviving him are his wife, two sons, Charlie and George of this city, and one daughter, Mrs. F. E. Culver of Junction City. He also leaves four brothers, Michael of this city, Joseph of Tenhassen, Minn, Valentine of Mauston and Samuel of Spring Valley, and one sister, Mrs. J. Bires of New Lisbon.
Mr. Alton was a very kindhearted husband and father. He bore his afflictions with bravery and resignation. Bearing in mind his great suffering one can scarcely say his death to be regretted as it brings him rest after long weary and painful years. His family and friends will long miss him from among them.
The funeral takes place this afternoon at two o'clock at the M. E. church Rev. Hicks officiating.
