He joined the Tulsa Tribune's staff in 1933, becoming the managing editor in 1936. He became editor and publisher in 1941. His Saturday editorials became a syndicated column that were carried in up to 150 newspapers nationwide. He was president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in 1956, and president of the United States Chamber of Commerce in 1969.
