Governor of Virginia, mayor of Petersburg, Confederate officer, newspaper editor. Born in Petersburg. Attended Hillsboro Military Academy and Washington College in St. Louis. Clerk on Mississippi River steamboat. Drillmaster of Missouri troops; Private Company A, 12th Virginia. Wounded at Second Manassas. Became a member of General William Mahone's staff and later to General Weisiger. He was a newspaper editor in Petersburg and Nofolk after the War. Elected mayor of Petersburg three times. Governor of Virginia, 1882-86.
