Singer, Songwriter, Producer and Pastor. His music career began in 1971 as a member of the musical group The Independents. Their 1973 song Leaving Me sold over a million copies leading to a gold record. The group disbanded in 1975. In 1976 he married singer Natalie Cole, the daughter of the late Nat King Cole. He then focused more on Natalie's career, winning Grammy Awards for producing her songs; This Will Be, Inseparable and Sophisticated Lady. They divorced in 1980, but he continued to work as a producer for her. He remarried in 1983. He also wrote and produced hits for Ronnie Dyson. Returning to Chicago, he succeeded his father, Rev. Robert Yancy Sr., as pastor of the Fountain of Life Baptist Church after the elder Yancy's death in 1977. His gospel songwriting songs include: I`m a Child of the King and Sign Me Up for the Christian Jubilee, and his solo album Heavy Load. He was nominated for a Grammy in 1979 for producing the album for his church choir, the Fountain of Life Joy Choir. He died after suffering a heart attack. The Rev. Jesse Jackson officiated the services.
