The Marion Pilot Thursday October 9, 1902
The schools of Marion have been closed because of diphtheria, which prevails in the city. On Saturday evening occurred the death of Lura Marchant, the little daughter of Cal Marchant. She was buried Sunday morning. There are known to be three other cases in the city but it is reported that they are light and there is no reason to be alarmed over the situation. Every precaution is being taken to prevent the spread of the malady. Monday morning the board of health ordered that the Lincoln and Prescott school buildings be closed. Then the board of education decided to close all the school buildings until it is certain that the disease has been thoroughly stamped out. By such prompt action on the part of the authorities it is believed that no new cases will develop and that there is really no cause whatever for any uneasiness.

Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Marchant will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their great sorrow in the sudden death of their little daughter Laura, who was a general favorite among all who knew her.
