Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. After the outbreak of the Civil war, he entered the Union Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a three-month enlistment unit. When a vacancy occurring by the resignation of Lieutenant P. S. Turner, he was then promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He obtained a Captain’s commission on August 31, 1861, and re-enlisted hen more men were called into service and was assigned to the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry as the commander of it’s Company B. For gallantry on the field, he was promoted to the rank of Major on December 24, 1862. On December 31, 1862, was again promoted for gallantry to Lieutenant Colonel. He receiving severe wounds at the Battle of Murfreesboro, which disabled him, and he was discharged February 1, 1863. He re-entered the service, March 14, 1865, as Lieutenant Colonel of the 194th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to Colonel on October 22, 1865, and was mustered out with his regiment October 24, 1865. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers “for gallant and meritorious services during the war”. He was wounded in the leg at the October 1862 Battle of Perryville, Kentucky and was crippled for life; wounded in the throat at Stone River and received several minor wounds. He received the Ohio “Imperium in Imperio,” (4 were given in the entire state). After the war he served as a Delegate to Republican National Convention from Ohio in 1868. He died in 1871 in Dayton, Ohio. In a state of desperation, caused by financial difficulties, he took his own life by self inflected gun shot and died, at the age of thirty-six. (bio by: Beverly)
