Lucille was the daughter of Bernard and Louisa Mertens Frank. She married Charles Peter M. Quedens, son of Charles Henry Augustus and Meta L. Dierks Quedens.

Charles and Lucille were the parents of one child; Eunice M. Quedens. Mr. Quedens was an inveterate gambler and his lifestyle finally led Lucille to obtain a divorce. The judge granted her sole custody of her young daughter.

Mrs. Quedens was a beautiful woman and had dabbled in acting. She had a flair for creating high fashion accessories and was a skilled milliner. She opened a hat shop in San Francisco and worked long hours to support herself and her daughter. She maintained a good relationship with her in-laws and she and Eunice lived, for a time, in an apartment in Meta Frank's home. Lucille then sent her daughter to a Catholic boarding school for several years. After this, Eunice was invited to live in the home of her spinster aunt, Elsie M. Quedens, in Mill Valley, California. She attended Tamalpais High School while living there.

Throughout this time, Lucille remained in close contact with her daughter. She encouraged Eunice's acting aspirations and was a constant source of strength and support to her. As Eunice began receiving more offers of work, a name change was suggested and the stage name of Eve Arden was chosen.

Sadly, Lucille did not live long enough to see her daughter reach the level of fame in stage, radio, film and television that she would eventually achieve. Mrs. Quedens can be credited, however, with providing the foundation for her daughter's success.
