In 1916 he was the 50th Grand Master of Masons in California, being from California Lodge #1, San Francisco. Also the Grand Treasurer for California 1942-1954. A lawyer, he was a nationally recognized expert in law pertaining to life insurance and was the President of West Coast Life Insurance Company. He played a major role in the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. He was Director of the bridge district from 1929-1936 and chief engineer Joseph Strauss stated on more than one occasion that if it had not been for Keesling's help, the task of building the bridge would not have been possible.
