Thomas Ingles Janes was born and raised in Canada. His father was born in England and mother in Scotland. They moved to Canada about 1839, and his father was engaged in farming. His father died when Thomas was a child. He first moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1884, and came to California in early 1887 and attended Hahnemann Hospital College in San Francisco, where he graduated in 1888 with a degree in medicine. Early in 1889 he was appointed to the Chair of Hygiene and Sanitation Science.
