Religious Figure. A native of Greece, he was one of the disciples of Saint Colomban, founder of the Monastery of Bobbio. In reality its original name is unknown and the name by which it is known is a Latinized metamorphosis of Bobulenus deriving from the place where he wore the monastic clothes. In 639 he succeeded as abbot with diocesan office in Saint Bertulfus assuming the burden of the process of beatification of Saint Colombanus. In 643 he participated in the drafting of the laws of the Lombards or Edictum Rotharis Regis, written in Pavia. Barbolenus is also remembered for having amalgamated the rule of Saint Colombanus with that of San Benedict, carrying out an authentic reform of monastic life extended to pedagogical activity. He died in 653 and is revered as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
