WINTHROP, Maine — Fred A. Whitaker, 65, died Dec. 1, 2009 at Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

He was born Jan. 4, 1944, in Rochester, N.H., the son of Kenneth V. and Lucille E. (King) Whitaker.

He was raised in Berwick and attended local schools. He resided in Berwick for most of his younger years and then went on to live in Manchester, N.H., Kennebunk, Old Orchard and finally Winthrop.

Fred enjoyed sports and played baseball as a youngster. The Red Sox were his team and he always remained a loyal Red Sox fan.

History and politics were high on his interest list and he would always like to engage in conversations of his thoughts and concerns. He always had a great sense of humor and loved to joke with anyone that could keep up with him. Fred could be heard in song from time to time; he enjoyed singing which seems to be a family trait.

Members of his family include his sisters, Mary Whitaker Fuller of South Berwick and Elizabeth A. Brunette and husband, Kenneth, of Rollinsford, N.H.; nieces and nephews, Michael Williams and wife, Karmen, of Westfield, Mass., Kelly Williams of South Berwick, Scott Norton and wife, Rachel, of Barrington, N.H., and Kerri Newick and husband, Steve, of Strafford, N.H.; eight great-nieces and nephews; one aunt, Marjorie Whitaker of Portsmouth; one uncle, Ellsworth Whittaker of Massachusetts; several cousins and special longtime friends.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff of Winthrop Manor and Maine General for their kindness and caring during Fred's illness.

Memorial visitation will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick, Maine, where a Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick.
