Frederick Owen Heney April 24, 1932 - September 19, 2008 Owen Heney, 76, formerly of Durham, N.H., passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at Manor Care West, in Green Bay, Wis. He was born April 24, 1932, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, to Frederick C. and Winifred (Fairbrother) Heney. Owen married Patricia "Patsy" C. Labonte on June 25, 1960. She preceded him in death on June 29, 2003. He is survived by his three children, Susan Page, of Munster, Ind., Peter Heney, of Sebastopol, Calif., Kathleen (Jon) Brandt, of Green Bay, Wis.; and eight grandchildren, Margaret, Joel, and Luke Page; Lauren and Claire Heney; and Ruth, Jack, and Ava Brandt. Owen entered the U.S. Navy in 1950, assigned to Norfolk, Va. as a bombardier instructor, and honorably discharged in April 1955. Following his service, he attended Keene State Teacher's College where he met Patsy, his lifelong love. After their marriage in 1960, he began a long and successful career in the college bookstore business starting as an Assistant Store Manager at Bucknell University. He then moved to the University of Vermont, where he was the General Manager for 12 years and helped design the new "state of the art" bookstore facilities for the University. He also briefly managed the college store for Penn State. In 1976, he was appointed as President of the National Association of College Stores, an association comprised of over 2,200 college and university stores in the U.S., Canada and 15 other countries. While President of NACS he attended the annual congress of International Community of Booksellers in Helsinki, Finland. Owen was an avid skier and member of the National Ski Patrol for most of his adult life in N.H. and Vt. He received the Gold & Green Merit Star of recognition from the National Ski Patrol System for the off-trail rescue of two people at Bolton, Vt., on Feb. 19, 1970. He was a Volunteer fireman and Volunteer EMT while living in Vt. and Pa. On Aug. 31, 1981, Owen made an official Hole-In-One of 134 yards on the 14th hole of Lawsonia Links, Green Lake, Wis. He was a member of the Vermont Society of the National Society of Sons of the American Revolution. Owen was a skilled carpenter, building the first family house from the foundation up in Vt. with one of his friends. He was a talented artist and sculptor, an avid fan of the Montreal Canadians' hockey team, enjoyed fishing, and traveling with his wife Patsy to many exotic locations. Committal service will be at St. Charles Cemetery in Dover, N.H., at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008. A special thank you to the nurses at Manor Care West, Green Bay, Wis., who cared for Owen at the end of his life. His family appreciates their compassion and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Owen.
