William had an older brother, Dr George Frederic Bergin (Junior) who assisted their father at the Ashley Down Orphanage. When his brother, George, died in 1910 their father sent for William to help. William helped his father then became the second Director of the George Muller Ashley Down Orphanages from 1912-1930 after his father, who was the first Director of the orphanages, died in 1912.
