She was born September 8, 1934 in Surry County, NC to the late Lacy and Hazel Sutphin McMillian (second child).
She was employed many years at Adams-Millis Hosiery where she was an exemplary employee. She was a Member of Northside Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Susan Atkinson, Pinnacle, 2 grandchildren, Steven Marsh, Mt. Airy and Amber Atkinson, Orlando, FL, a brother and two sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Jayne. McMillian, Mt. Airy and Mary McMillian, Mt. Airy, NC, and a brother in-law and sister-in-law, Al and Margaret Tolbert, Mt. Airy, several nieces and nephews of which she dearly loved. Mrs. Gloria Dollyhigh of Mt. Airy was her very special friend and caregiver and brought much joy to Mary Ellen during her last few months of life.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Tolbert was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Bessie and Hoover Sawyers and a brother, Ronald T. McMillian.
A graveside service will be held 3:00 pm Saturday, April 21, 3012 at Skyline Memory Gardens conducted by Rev. Dean Eaton and music by Rev. Bailey Nelson. The family will receive friends 2:00 pm Saturday until time for Mrs. Tolbert to be taken to the cemetery for the graveside service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may made to the Salvation Army, 651 S. South Street, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
