In Hempstead County, everyone that attended Saratoga High School in the 1940s and 50s remembers "Uncle Bud" Williams. He was the janitor and lived in a spare room in the school building.
Uncle Bud was more or less homeless and lived with whoever would take him in,
At one time many schools in the area were being broken into. M.H. Peebles who was the superintendent of Okay/Saratoga schools hired Uncle Bud, hopeing to maybe deter the school being broken into.

While working and staying at the school Uncle Bud had his 80th birthday. The student body sang Happy Birthday to him. In those days it was permissible to have a Christmas tree in school. The students drew names and exchanged gifts. Uncle Bud always had a gift under the tree.
He was a friend to everyone at the school, teachers and students alike. Everyone in the area knew him.
