VEVAY – John Thomas Amos, 86, of Vevay, went to be with the Lord at 3:43 p.m. on Monday, April 16, 2012, at Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Vevay.
John was born on January 21, 1926, in Van Buren, Grant County, to the late Paul Leroy and Wilma Geraldine (Marshall) Amos. They moved to Hartford City in 1937.
He was inducted into the United States Navy on May 11, 1944, in Indianapolis, rising to the rank of Coxswain, SV-6, serving during World War II at the NTS, Great Lakes, IL, ATB, Ft. Pierce, Fla., and aboard the USS LST - 895. For his service to his country, he received the American Area Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with 2 Stars and the World War II Victory Ribbon. John was also a proud member of the Seabees during World War II. He was honorably discharged on June 2, 1946, at Great Lakes, Ill.
He then went to work at Knecht Trucking as a mechanic and truck driver, working there until it closed. He joined the Hartford City Fire Department as a volunteer in 1958 and served until 1984. He worked at the Hartford City Landfill until he moved to Vevay in 1985. John was employed as a mechanic with the Town of Vevay from 1985 to 1995, retiring after 10 years of employment. He loved working on racecars and riding motorcycles and in his spare time he loved to fish and was an avid gun enthusiast. John enjoyed teaching muzzle loading to the youth in 4-H.
John will be greatly missed by his wife of 48 years, Judy (Fosnight) Amos; his daughters, Carolyn (Dan) Garrett, of Hartford City, Paula Myers, of Vevay, and Sandy Skeens, of Vevay; his sons, Johnny Amos, of Hartford City, and James (Connie) Amos, of Hudson; his grandchildren, Linda (Scott) Umminger, of Danville, Ky., Amanda Johnson, of Cape Coral, Fla., Miranda Garrett, of Cape Coral, Fla., Angela Stewart, of Tampa, Fla., Abby Skeens, of Vevay, Jeremiah Skeens, of Vevay, Blaine (Mandy) Williams, of South Milford, and Tryan (Anthony) Mitzner, of La Grange; his great-grandchildren, Justina Umminger, Jerrick Umminger, Jazzilyn Umminger, Kaiden Ross, Quinn Parsons, Donovan Stewart and Johnathan Williams; his sisters, Miriam Wise, of Hartford City, Shirley Lennon, of Hartford City, and Jacqueline Sum, of Haddonfield, N.J.; his brother, Carl Amos, of Shoshoni, Wyo.; along with several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma, in 1976, his father, Paul, in 1983, a great-grandson, Jaston Thomas Umminger, in 1996, and a sister, Margaret Joyce (Amos) Snow, in 1999.
Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 20, 2012, at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry St., Vevay, with the Rev. Mike Barnes officiating. Burial will be in the Vevay Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry St., Vevay. Military rites will be conducted by the honor guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5396 at the Vevay Cemetery.
