James Reed was the son of Solomon and Susan Demanda (Brock) Reed. James rode as a captain under William Clarke Quantrill during the Civil War. He married Myra Maybelle Shirley (Belle Starr) in November 1866 by a minister in Collin County, Texas. They had a daughter, Rose Lee 'Pearl Starr' Reed, born September 1868 and a son, James Edwin 'Eddie' Reed, born February 1871.
Jim was shot and killed by former friend, John Morris for $5,000 reward.
