Musician. A bassist, he is best known for his work as a member of the Kelly Four who backed Eddie Cochran. He moved with his family to Los Angeles at the age of six and by his teens, he had mastered the electric Fender Bass guitar. Shriver's reputation as a magnificent instrumentalist grew and as a result he met fellow California transplant Eddie Cochran who himself was on the rise to stardom. During the late 1950s with the aid of Shriver, Cochran challenged the popularity of such contemporary rock figures as Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley. He made his mark as a recording artist with his contributions to several of Cochran's tracks and in 1960, he accompanied him on his tour of the United Kingdom. Tragically, Cochran died in an automobile accident during this period. Shriver would begin a lengthy association with musician Trini Lopez (who enjoyed a successful period of popularity during the 1960s), serving as his conductor and bassist. While accompanying Lopez on tour, he experienced the highlight of sharing the stage with The Beatles and formed friendships with them. Over the next few decades, his talents were in high demand and his ability to adapt to a wide range of music style allowed for him to back the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Frank Sinatra. During the 1970s, Shriver settled in Washington State to raise his family and partake in several businesses. He remained active in the entertainment industry, as he was a participant in The Olympia Symphony and The Johnny Lewis Big Band. He died of complications from both a heart attack and stroke.
