Poet, Singer, Actor. A Soviet dissident, Igor Talkov had his breakthrough with the David Tukhmanov-composed song "Chistye prudy" which was an instant hit. Although his lyrics were mostly about love, there was clear criticism of the Soviet Union. He was dissatisfied with Perestroika, making the changes in his lyrics as nothing but a rouse. He also had a brief career in cinema, with two movies: Behind the Last Line (Za posledney chertoy) and Tsar Ivan the Terrible (Tsar Ivan Groznyy), both released in 1991. The latter film he disliked, even apologizing to its premiere audience for participating in the film. Since he refused to participate in the post-production sound on the film, another actor dubbed his lines. He was shot to death while performing at a concert, on October 6th, 1991. Valeriy Schlyafman, Talkov's one time manager, was suspected of the murder by a Russian court in 1992. However, he managed to escape to Israel via Ukraine before he could be arrested, and has stayed there since, with Israel refusing to extradite him. Schlyafman maintains he is innocent, claiming that the KGB was responsible for Talkov's death. Officially, his murder is unsolved.
