Professional Golfer. In 1947 he became the first Virginian to win the U.S. Open Golf Tournament. That year, he was also was a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team. In 1953 he was awarded golf's first $100,000 prize, winning the Tam O'Shanter World Championship of Golf, the first golf tournament to be broadcast nationally. He is a member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame of the American Golfers Hall of Fame.
