He had twice retired because of injuries and struggles with weight. The Preakness was run before the Kentucky Derby and the horse survived trouble to win by a mere half length. The Derby was won easily by two lengths and the Belmont by three. He was retired to stud after being beaten in a race at Saratoga by a 100-1 favored horse. He set a single season earnings record that stood for sixteen years. He's the only Triple Crown winner to sire another Triple Crown winner (Omaha). After his first two crops, Gallant Fox's stallion career was disapointing. He died at age twenty seven.
