My father was a 1934 graduate of Fremont High School in Oakland, California. Like his father before him, he was a hard-working member of the Oakland Scavenger Company (aka garbage man) for 42 years. When he first started working at at age 18, things were very different than they are now. Those were the days when the garbage men had to carry the trash in barrels on their backs and dump them into the garbage trucks. These were STRONG men!

A man of few words, he enjoyed fishing and camping with his family, as well as the occasional trip to Reno to play the slot machines. In his middle years, he was also an active member of three Italian clubs in Oakland: The Colombo Club (where he met my mother), the Alpicella Club, and the Ligure Club.

He left behind his wife of 57 years, Elsie Ratto; a daughter (me); a son-in-law; and two grandsons. He is greatly missed.

Husband of Elsie Josephine Badella Ratto
Father of Deborah Ann Ratto Dash
Brother of Rena Cerruti
Son of Antonio Ratto and Bernardina Ratto
