United States Army General. He was commander of all United States Forces in Europe during the initial US involvement in that theatre during World War II. Graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1906, he initially served in the cavalry in the Philippines. From 1907 to 1917 he served at various forts, mostly in the northwest, until transferring to the Signal Corp. A huge proponent of the Air Corps, he served as the first commander of the General Head Quarters of the United States Army Air Force, becoming the first airman to handle Regular Army organizational and training for the Corps. After the start of the Allies campaign in North Africa, he served as the commander of United States Forces in the Middle East. In February 1943, while commander of the European Theater of Operations, he launched the air campaign against Germany. He was killed in an aircraft accident in Iceland in May of 1943. He received 2 Distinguished Service Medals, a Distinguished Flying Cross, ten Air Medals, and the Purple Heart. Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland is named for him.
