Civil War Union Brigadier General. Wealthy NYC wool merchant. Was in Egypt when the Civil War broke out and promptly went to France and purchased arms for the Union. Was appointed Brigadier General, US Volunteers by President Abraham Lincoln on September 28, 1861 and was in charge of Benton Barracks and the districts of Cairo and St Louis. Resigned his commission in October 20,1863.
