Not much is known about the birth of John Chartis Geboe. The 1920 U.S. Census shows that he and his parents were all born in Kansas. However, some documents from the Bureau of Indian Affairs has his birth in Joplin, Missouri.

Family lore states that John Chartis was of French-Canadian descent, but he was adopted into the Peoria Tribe when he was a young man. It appears his parents died and he was raised by other relatives.

John Chartis married Lucy Bearskin circa 1904. Lucy was the daughter of George William and Susan E. Spicer Bearskin. The Bearskins were from the Seneca - Cayuga Tribe.

John and Lucy Geboe were the parents of five children; four girls and one son. Their children were all born in Wyandotte, Ottawa County, Oklahoma. However, in 1920 the family was living in Joplin, Missouri. It seems they moved back and forth between Oklahoma and Missouri several times during their married life.

John Chartis died in 1939 at Supalpa, Creek County, Oklahoma. He was laid to rest at the Council House Cemetery at Wyandotte, Oklahoma.
