Musician. He was an Austrian violinist and conductor, best known as the long-standing concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1933, he joined the Vienna Philharmonic as first violinist and three years later, he was named concertmaster. Noted as a master of the waltz, he achieved world fame as conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's "Wiener Philharmoniker" concerts. He conducted the orchestra's International broadcasts from 1954, until his retirement in 1979. He also frequently worked with Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and with the London Philharmonic. He died of a stroke at age 81.
