Captain Armstrong was a Civil War Veteran, having severed on the USS Fort Jackson serving as an Acting Ensign. He was the Captain of many ships throughout his life, including the bark Templar, during its famous voyage in 1879 in which most of the crew contacted yellow fever and died. The Captain himself became ill and his daughter Emma was forced to navigate the ship. Captain Armstrong was an inmate of the Sailor's Snug Harbor for 13 years and was married twice. His first wife was Andalusia Rogers, who died aboard the Templar and his second wife, Harriet Ellsworth, divorced him prior to his stay at Sailor's Snug Harbor. He was pre-deceased by several children and left four adult children at the time of this death.
