George Poore, Sr. was born circa 1723, in Virginia. He was married to his first wife Elizabeth in 1748 and they were the parents of five children. His first wife died and he was married for a second time in 1760 to Martha Fleming. Martha was a widow and had two children from her prior marriage and when she married George she became the step mother to George's five children, the eldest being eleven. Then, George and Martha had nine more children: Martha (1761), Anne (1763), Lydia (1765), Sarah (1767), Thompson (1769), Milia (1771), Hugh (1774), Rhoda (1776), and Nancy (1779). Martha Fleming Thompson Poore died in Virgina, then George joined some of his children in Ohio. He died in either 1810 or 1811, in what is now Jackson County, Ohio and was buried in Winchester Cemetery, Bloomfield Township. This biography was adapted from Mary Poor Hoffer's 1981 book, George Poore and Descendants 1723-1810. I have not actually located George's grave at Winchester Cemetery despite several visits there, but his grandson was George Poore (who married Mary Billups). George and Mary have a very prominent marker in Winchester Cemetery. I am descended from his son Hugh Poore who was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on 21 July 1774. If you have an interest in Poore Genealogy, I highly recommend Mary Poor Hoffer's book cited above. Copies are located in several libraries in Indiana and it is listed with the Library of Congress.
