Lieutenant Shank, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Attack Squadron 56, Carrier Air Wing 5 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS MIDWAY (CVA-41). On July 23, 1972, he was the pilot of a Vought Attack Aircraft Corsair II (A-7B) on a mission over Thai Binh, 25 miles south of Haiphong, North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on July 17, 1984 and identified on August 2, 1984. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
