After his ordination he was sent to Rome to the Pontifical Gregorian and Lateran Universities to study Civil and Canon Law. He went back to Malta where he taught at the Royal University of Malta for some years. He later moved to New Orleans where he spent more than 40 years serving the Archdiocese and helping the sick as a chaplain at Charity Hospital and Veterans Administration. To him that was more of an achievement than anything else.
On Wednesday, September 14, 2005, he presided Mass for his late brother, Father Herculan at St. Mark Catholic Church in Gonzales, Louisiana. The next day, he concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for his brother with Bishop Robert W. Muench of Baton Rouge.
Father Lawrence spent his last years in Kenner, Louisiana, where he passed away on November 1, 2008, aged 82. He was survived by his elder brother, Father Hugo DeMaria of New South Wales, Australia, who passed away at 87 years of age in 2010.
