My father was the third of four children born to Joseph and Marie Mileham. His father died when my dad was four and his mother died when he was twelve. His maternal grandmother raised him and his two older brothers and an aunt raised his sister.
He graduated from Englewood High School in the city of Chicago in 1940. He entered WWII on February 22, 1943. He was a light tank crewman 1736. Was member of crew of light tank. Drove tank, often to secure maximum fire power without undue exposure. Operated radio, to keep contact with other elements. Most of this tank work was done in southern France, Northern France, and Germany. Worked 37 mm and M-5 tank, the 75 mm on the M-24. Also fired, and serviced 30 to 50 caliber machine guns. Inspected engines, oil levels, interphone head sets, radio turret mechansim, tracks and bogie wheels. He also received the purple heart.
He went home on December 15, 1945. He was at Camp Grant, Il. He returned to the New York Port of Embarkation from overseas service on the M.S. "John Ericsson" which left Marseilles, France on November 28,1945.
My dad went to work for Time Magazine in Chicago where he met my mom. They married on July 5,1947. My older sister, myself and my younger brother were all born in Chicago. Our family relocated to Los Angeles, Calif in 1951 where my youngest brother was born. My father went to work for Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo, CA. His job relocated in Fullerton, Calif so we moved to Santa Ana, Calif.
My father passed away Aug. 5th, 1965 at the age of 42 from emphysema. I love you, dad.My dad was the most loving dad in the world. His childhood was so rough losing both parents at the age of 12 that he treasured his family that God blessed him with. Thank you for all that you did for our family dad. You were the best dad any daughter could ask for. I can't wait to see you again. I miss you just as much today as when the day you went home to be with the Lord. I love you.
