Roman Catholic Bishop. He attended his studies at the seminary of his city and subsequently at the Pontifical Roman Seminary, graduating in Theology. Goretti was ordained priest on April 5, 1953 in the cathedral of Citta di Castello, and for a short time he served as assistant pastor and teacher of religion in his diocese, then in 1955 Goretti was recalled to Rome in the service of the Holy See, where he carried out various tasks at the Sacred Congregation of Clergy. He was a judge in the Court of Lazio, a teacher at the Salesian Pontifical University and worked as contributor to various magazines. He was appointed bishop of Assisi, Nocera Umbra and Gualdo Tadino on December 14, 1980. On 6 January the following year he received episcopal ordination from Pope John Paul II in Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican in Rome. For some years he was secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and Catechesis, and was appointed by Pope as member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (1992 to 1997), and President of the Secretariat of the Italian Bishops' Conference for Ecumenism and Dialogue (1990 to 1995). Bishop Goretti also was President of the Umbra Episcopal Conference (1996 to 2005). He became Bishop Emeritus on February 11, 2006.
