KARL KAPPES, 82, DIES IN TOLEDO

Karl Kappes, 82, of Toledo, famed artist and teacher, and a native of Zanesville, died yesterday at his home, it was learned here today.
Mr. Kappes was the son of John Jacob and Elizabeth Foerster Kappes, pioneer Zanesville residents.
He attended Madison school in Putnam, and later was graduated from Lash high school.
Mr. Kappes studied art in Cincinnati and New York, and as a member of the Art Students League, he studied with William Merritt Chase.
He later studied in Europe with Benjamin Constant of the Acadamie Julian in Paris, and with Carl Marr of the Royal Academy of Munich.
Mr. Kappes was awarded high honors for his work at Munich, and served as secretary for a group of American students studying art there.
Mr. Kappes maintained studios in New York and Philadelphia, but later returned to Zanesville where he was employed to instruct decorators at the Weller Pottery company.
During the time he taught here, Will Rannells, Andrew Loomis and Stanley Thompson, all who have become nationally-known artists, were among his pupils.
Mr. Kappes later taught for years in Toledo, and many of his students there won scholarships in the country's leading art schools.
One of Mr. Kappes prize winning pictures, done while in Munich, is now among the permanent collection of the local Art Institute.
Services will be held in Toledo, but the body will be brought here for burial. Time of the services has not been announced.
Mr. Kappes is survived by two sisters, Mrs. J. R. Berkshire and Mrs. E. M. Ayers; a nephew, Thomas Berkshire, and four nieces, Mrs. C. N. Gorsuch, Mrs. R. G. Hay, Mrs. Charles Runkle, and Mrs. Louise Ayers Hyde, all of Zanesville.

KARL KAPPES FUNERAL SERVICES HERE SATURDAY
The body of Karl Kappes, famed artist and teacher, who died Tuesday at Toledo, will arrive here Friday morning, and will be taken to the Mader-Peoples funeral home.
It will be removed to the home of Mrs. E. M. Ayers, Adair avenue, Friday afternoon for funeral services which will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. Rev. D. King Kerr will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood.
Friends may call at the Ayers home after 3 p.m. Friday.
