Dr.James A. Day, 98, of Springfield, the oldest physician in Sangamon County and a prominent Springfield physician for many years, retiring from active practice in 1940, died Thursday, Aug. 29, at his residence.

He was born in Palmyra the son of Dr. and Mrs. William C. Day.

Dr. Day attended Grinnell College and Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Mo., and received his pre-medical training at the University of Missouri. In 1890 he graduated from St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons.

In 1900 he decided to specialize in surgery and spent two years studying in the surgical centers of Europe. Prior to moving to Springfield in 1917, Dr. Day was chief surgeon at Our Saviour Hospital, Jacksonville, IL, and was on the Passavant Hospital staff, later conducting his own private surgical hospital.

He was survived by two sons, J. Edward and William F., seven grandchildren.

Services at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
