Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. When the Civil War began he helped recruit two companies of infantry from New York City, New York's Scandinavian immigrant community. The recruits became Companies I and K of the 1st New York Volunteer Infantry, and Christian T. Christensen was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Company I on April 24, 1861. Promoted Captain and commander of the company on November 5, 1861, he served with the regiment until the fall of 1862. On September 13, 1862 he was promoted to Major, and transferred to the staff of Major General John E. Wool, to serve as an Aide-de-Camp. In May 1864 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers and moved to the staff of Major General Edward R.S. Canby as an Assistant Adjutant General. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services", and was honorably mustered out on July 22, 1865. After the war he became a bank president in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, and served as a Major General in the New York State Militia before returning to his native Denmark, where he died in 1905.
