STARKVILLE - John H. Mitchell Jr., 73, retired bank CEO and vice chairman for National Bank of Commerce, died of cancer Friday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Starkville First United Methodist Church with burial in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham. Welch Funeral Home has charge. He was former president of Mississippi Bankers Association, Starkville Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, United Way and Economic Development Authority. He was also a World War II Marine Corps veteran. Mr. Mitchell, the husband of Ann Brooks Mitchell, also leaves two daughters, Miller Mitchell Ferrie of Hebron, N.D., and Leslie McAllister Terrell of Atlanta; two sons, John Cole Mitchell of Memphis and Darrell Britton McAllister of Columbus; a brother, James Mitchell of Germantown, Tenn., and four grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be made to John Mitchell Scholarship Fund at Mississippi State University.

MITCHELL, JOHN H. JR, age 73, of Starkville, MS, died June 18, 1999. Mr. Mitchell was born in Grenada, MS and attended First United Methodist Church. He was a retired bank CEO and Vice Chairman with National Bank of Commerce. He was also a former President of Mississippi Bankers Association. (He had a 40 year career in banking.) He was a former President of the Starkville Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, United Way and the Economic Development Authority. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi and former president of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He graduated from LSU School of Banking. A veteran of WWII, Mr. Mitchell served in the United States Marine Corp. Mr. Mitchell was co-owner of CWT/Travel First and was a born again Bulldog Fan. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 20, 1999 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church Family Life Center. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 21, 1999 at 11:30 at First United Methodist Church in Starkville with burial at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, AL. Rev. Bob Whiteside, Rev. Bill Beavers and Rev. Paul Ferrie officiating. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta DuBard Mitchell. Survivors include wife Ann Brooks Mitchell of Starkville, MS; daughters, Miller Mitchell Ferrie of Hebron, ND and Leslie McAllister Terrell of Atlanta, GA; sons John Cole Mitchell of Memphis, TN and Darrell Britton McAllister of Columbus, MS; brother, James Mitchell of Germantown, TN; and four grandchildren.
