Author. Agnes Stratton Tilghman was an American author who wrote about her adventures in the American Wild West. Born the daughter of a rancher, she was self-educated after being homeschooled by her mother. Later, she attended the University of Oklahoma, where she published her first poem. After being a school teacher for three years, she was twenty-three when she married lawman Bill Tilghman, who was more than twenty years her senior, a widower, and had children from his first wife. She graduated with honors with a BA in Education in 1947 from Central State College. In 1948, she wrote "Marshall of the Last Frontier: The Life and Service of William Matthew Tilghman," which was her husband's biography and chronicled the experiences of a noted peace officer fighting outlaw gangs during Oklahoma's territorial days. She wrote articles for various magazines and the "Ada Evening News" before being published in the "New York Times." In 1925, she published "Dugout", which became a State of Oklahoma textbook for schools. She was considered to be a historian, poet, and an authority on local plant life. Other publications include "Sacajawea," "Prairie Woods," "The Shoshoni, Katska of the Seminoles," and "Quanah the Eagle of the Comanche." Her husband advanced from law enforcement to politics and then western filmmaking with him making four films between 1908 and 1915. At 70 years or more, her husband returned to law enforcement against her support. Ending his fifty-year career in law enforcement, her husband was eventually shot to death while on duty. She documented much on the Native American life in the state. She died of natural causes and was buried next to her husband.
