Dorothy was the daughter of Isaac Hinchley. Her lineage can be traced back 8 generations to a Sir John Henclyve born in 1320 and appointed the sheriff of Staffordshire 1327-1330. Ralph and Dorothy were both 17 at the time of the marriage in 1629.

Being from Lancashire, the home county of George Fox, founder of the Society of Friends. Dorothy and Ralph were early converts and then came to Ireland to escape persecution. Dorothy was widowed for 29 years before being buried beside Ralph.

Her death is recorded in the Friends records in Dublin:

Dorothy Newby, mother-in-law of William Norris, -- being very aged -- some avers one hundred years - deceased at the home of her son-in-law and was buried at Friends burial place near Stephens Green, 14 of 10 Mo. 1711. She was a woman of good report and orderly conversation, ready to serve the Truth and friends, in her station, whilst of ability. But for many years before she died was very weak and infirm yet very sensibly till near her departure, and we have cause to hope she died in peace with the Lord.
