Actor. He was an American character actor, who appeared in 151 films or television programs over six decades. Born Charles Francis Maxwell, he graduated from the University of Michigan studying law before beginning acting successfully on the Broadway stage. He first appeared on television in 1950. He was blacklisted for a time during Senator McCarthy's era with dramatic accusations of many actors being communists, hence returned to the stage in summer stock for an income. His most-noted role was as that of "Dan Rooney" in the ABC daytime series "General Hospital" from 1978 to 1990. Besides being a one-episode guest star in several series, he also had regular roles in the television series "Our Man Higgins," "The Second Hundred Years," and "Felony." In films, he was uncredited or had bit speaking roles of an unnamed man, a policeman, or clerk. He was a leading figure in the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) for several decades. He was president of the union's Los Angeles chapter from 1982 to 1985. He married twice and both were actresses. He had one daughter, who became Vice President of Legal Affairs at 20th Century Fox. He died of heart disease.
