Joan Margaret Dearden, 66, of Ocean Boulevard, Hampton, died early Thursday morning in North Berwick, Maine, at the home of her daughter following a long illness.

She was born in Rochester on Feb. 9, 1942, the daughter of Raymond L. and Alice (McKone) Whitaker. She grew up in Berwick, Maine, and graduated from Berwick High School, Class of 1960. On Sept. 29, 1962, she married Kenneth Dearden. Together they enjoyed 24 years of marriage until his death in 1986.

Prior to starting their family, Joan and Ken owned and operated Rice Lodge in Hampton, and Russell's Inn in North Conway. Joan was a long-time member of the Hampton Lioness Club, and enjoyed volunteering in local senior centers.

She loved spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Along with gardening and the beach, she enjoyed meeting at the Oaks Country Club for lunch with girlfriends from Berwick High School.

Survivors include: her two children, James Dearden and his wife Sonja of Hampton, Laurie Beane and her husband Will of North Berwick, Maine; two brothers, John (David) Whitaker of Chicago, and Thomas Whitaker of Berwick, Maine; a sister, Barbara Martin and her husband Wilfred of Berwick; grandchildren, Kendall Dearden, Rachel, Andrew, Julia, and Caitlyn Beane; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, June 26, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 27, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels Parish/Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 25 Saw Mill Hill Road, Berwick. A burial will be held on Saturday, June 28, at 10 a.m. at High Street Cemetery, Hampton, N.H. If desired, memorial donations may be made in her memory to: Seacoast Cancer Center, In Memory of Joan M. Dearden, 789 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.
