Professional Football Player, Coach. For five seasons (1954 to 1958), he played at the left defensive-halfback position in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants. He attended Kensington High School in Buffalo and later Cameron University (Oklahoma) and North Carolina State University, prior to completing his collegiate football career at Tulsa University. He was selected by the Rams during the 10th round of the 1954 NFL Draft. He appeared in 53 regular season games and was a contributor to the Giants squad which captured the 1956 NFL Title. After retiring as a player, he embarked upon a lengthy coaching career, initially with the University of Tulsa, followed by a stint under Hank Stram with the Dallas Texans in the American Football League (1960 to 1962) and was on staff when they won the AFL title in 1962. He would go on to serve with the Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins, San Francisco 49ers and was given the opportunity to serve as head coach of the Houston Oilers in 1971; he compiled a 4-9-1 record that year. Other assignments included the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles. From 1982 until 1988 he served as the Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator under Mike Ditka, and was on staff when Chicago captured Super Bowl XX played on January 26, 1986.
