For twelve seasons (1958 to 1969), he played at the quarterback and punter positions in the National Football League with the Chicago/St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings. Born Stuart King Hill, he first made his imprint in sports while attending Brazosport High School (Texas) and during his collegiate years at Rice University, he earned letters in baseball, basketball and golf, in addition to excelling at football. While with the Owls, he shared quarterbacking duties with Frank Ryan (who went onto have an accomplished NFL career) and achieved All-American status in 1957, as he guided Rice to a Southwest Conference Title and an appearance in the Cotton Bowl game against Navy in January 1958. During that period, Hill is perhaps best remembered for his heroics in a contest which resulted in Rice upsetting number one ranked Texas A&M 7 to 6. During that game, he scored Rice's only touchdown and kicked the extra point which clinched the victory. His collegiate accomplishments earned him the distinction as being selected the number one overall pick (ahead of Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow) by the Cardinals during the 1958 NFL Draft. While with the Eagles in 1963, he yielded career-highs in passing yardage with 1,213 and touchdowns with 10. In 123 regular season games, he compiled 5,553 passing yards with 37 touchdowns. As a punter, he amassed 15,181 yards with a lifetime 41.3 average. After retiring as a player, he embarked upon a lengthy career as an offensive coordinator with the Houston Oilers (1970 to 1980) and New Orleans Saints (1981 to 1986). He served as a scout with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1986 to 1992. Hill was inducted into the Rice University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974.
