Charity was from Hardscrabble. She was the daughter of William Cain and Sarah Alston. In 1819 she married Willie P. Mangum. She managed his 600-acre plantation. The plantation grew wheat, corn, and tobacco. Their home was "Walnut Hall."

Willie and Charity had a daughter, Catherine Davis Mangum, who was born on October 17, 1830, and died on September 25, 1832. Their only son was killed in the Civil War. Their daughter Sally married William D. Lunsford. The other daughters, Mary and Martha, did not marry.
