Outlaw. A famed Highwayman, he was born in Normandy, France, and came to England under the service of the Duke of Richmond, soon becoming a highway thief. He is as notorious for his daring robberies as he is for his gallantry. He is said to have held up a coach in which a lady and gentleman were travelling. At his request the lady executed a coranto with him while the gentleman paid £100 for the entertainment. He was hanged at Tyburn in 1670 much to the dismay of many women. His tombstone in Covent Garden Church reads "Here lies Duval; If male thou art, look to thy purse; if female, to thy heart. Much havoc has he made of both; for all. Men he made to stand, and women he made to fall. The second Conqueror of the Norman race, Knights to his arm did yield, and ladies to his face. Old Tyburn's glory; England's illustrious Thief, Du Vall, the ladies' joy; Du Vall, the ladies' grief."
