William Banning, in 1892, along with his brother's Hancock and Joseph, jointly purchased Catalina Island for the sum of $128,740 USD. In 1915, following a fire that burned a quarter of Avalon, the Bannings sold the island to William Wrigley, Jr., of Wrigley Gum fame.
