World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 9th Battalion, Royal Leicestershire Regiment, British Army. During actions on October 1, 1917, east of Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke, Belgium, Lieutenant Colonel Bent was in command of a part of the 9th Battalion on his right. When forced back due to German intense artillery fire, he personally collected a platoon that was in reserve and led them forward to a counter-attack, after issuing orders to other officers to support a defense of the line. Lieutenant Colonel Bent was killed while leading the charge, which resulted in the securing of a portion of the line which was of essential importance for subsequent operations. For most conspicuous bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on January 11, 1918.
