DEATH OF JUDGE PRATT.

An Honorable and a Useful Life Peacefully Closed.

Judge Daniel Pratt, whose death occurred at noon yesterday, had long been in feeble health. The attack which resulted in his death was of comparatively short duration, however, and the sudden change in his condition was not remarked until yesterday morning. At the time of his death he was attended by Doctors Dallas and Pease, and members of his family were with him. His death was peaceful.

Born at Greenwich, Washington county, N. Y., in 1806, Judge Pratt completed a course of study at union college and was graduated there in 1833. He then came to Camillus where he read law with David D. Hillis, and in 1836 he came to this city to reside. A year later he was admitted to the bar, his associates in the class of that year including George F. Comstock and the late Charles B. Sedgwick. He associated himself in the practice of law with Mr. Hillis. In 1843 he was appointed county Judge of Onondaga county by Governor Bouck, serving in that office four years. In 1847 he was elected justice of the Supreme Court for the Fifth Judicial and was re-elected in 1851. At the close of twelve years of service Judge Pratt retired from the bench carrying with him an eminently honorable record. He was a member of the commission of thirty-two appointed by Governor Hoffman to revise the state constitution, and was one of the counsel chosen by the Legislature to conduct the impeachment proceeding against Judge Barnard. In 1873 Judge Pratt was elected Attorney General of the state, serving two years. Meanwhile he held the senior rank in the firm of Pratt, Mitchell & Brown. After the death of Mr. Mitchell a new firm was organized, and to this firm I. D. Garfield was subsequently admitted. As a lawyer, Judge Pratt has been reckoned for more than a quarter of a century among the leading members of the bar in New York state. In 1838 Judge Pratt married Miss Maria Rowe, of Camillus, an estimable lady, who shared actively in benevolent work and whose death occurred in 1872. He was again married in 1881. His surviving children are Charles Pratt and Daniel Pratt, jr.
