Civil War Union Army Officer. An 1846 graduate of Yale University, he was an educator and lawyer before the war. On April 21, 1861, nine days after the firing on Fort Sumter, this native southerner join the Union cause as a private in Company H, of the 71st New York Militia. With 3 months service in this unit, he was honorably mustered out of it. On October 26, 1861, he became the Captain of Company D, in the 53rd New York Volunteer Infantry. His promotion to Lieutenant Colonel was dated February 24, 1862. Again, he was honorably mustered out of the 53rd New York on 24th of March only to become the Colonel of the 101th New York Volunteer Infantry in the summer of 1862. He served in this role until finally being mustered out of Union service on December 24, 1862 under honorable conditions. He returned to his profession as a lawyer and became a dealer in petroleum products. A founder of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, he died in San Mateo, Florida in 1889.
