Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He began his Civil War service as a 1st Lieutenant in the 75th New York Volunteer Infantry. He then was commissioned first as Major of the 95th United States Colored Troops, then as Colonel and commander of the 97th United States Colored Troops. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious conduct at Pollard and Mobile, Ala."
