Nancy Lederer was born in 1841, at sea, the daughter of Henry Lederer and Mary Marie Catharina Kappes. She married John Johann Stephani at unknown date, in most likely Illinois. Her dad stated he immigrated here in 1841, on the 1900 Chicago census.

They had 2 known Stephani children:
Emma, 26 Jan 1857 (Alwin Wallace Hautau), below
Bertha E, Oct 1859 (Charles F. Bieling), below

Nancy died BETWEEN OCT 1859 and before the 18 JUL 1860 Chicago, IL census. On that date, she was no longer on the census. John and their children were residing together or with her parents below.

I checked out the June 1860 Cook Co., Illinois Mortality Schedule, which covers 1859 as well. I found a Nancy Nevader (was this Lederer instead?), age 25, born Bavaria G, died April 1860, cause Child Bed or Chila Bed, lasted 1 day. (Similarities here).

On the 3 Jul 1860 Ward 5, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois Census, in dwelling #810, on page no.106 (HeritageQuest), I found Liquor Dealers JOHN Stephani, 34 and Jacob Stephani, 30; EMMA Stephani, 4; BERTHA Stephani, 2 and Mary Preble, 18. John has $1,000 in real estate and $10,000 in personal property and Jacob has $3,000. in real estate and $10,000 in personal property. The children were born in "Chicago" and the rest were born in Prussia. It would appear the children's mother has passed away. On the same 1860 census, John Stephani's in laws claimed they had 2 young Stephani children: Emma, 2 and Fanny, 1. I can only assume the in-laws shared them or watched them during the time their father was at work.

1900 Chicago census: Nancy's widowed mom Mary claims she arrived in the U.S. in 1841 (and was here 59 years) and her daughter Bertha states her father was born in Germany and her mom was born at sea. Based on this Nancy was born in 1841, at sea.

I confirmed she was buried at Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago in the SW quarter, section G, lot 104, with the office. The cemetery record shows she died on 9 Mar 1860, aged 19 years, and "she has a marker," not yet located. Also here are her parents Henry and Mary, her husband John and their daughter Emma Stephani Hautau. Also in Nancy's lot or next to it, are Sam Lee, Thomas Clark, and Stephani: Jacob, plus Jacob's grandchildren, Francis and Bertha.

In 8-2020, the Rose Hill Cemetery office stated Nancy's daughter, Bertha "Stephani" was buried in SW quarter, section G, IN OR NEAR lot 104. Also in the same plot was her sibling Francis Stephani and her grandfather Jacob Stephani. They were the young children of Delbert Stephani (AKA Stephanes/Stephane). Plus Jacob's sister in law (above) Nancy Lederer Stephani ("in lot 104") and Sam Lee and Thomas Clark (the latter two relationship is unknown). Their graves are ALL unmarked, (confirmed in the 30 Apr 2021 photo). Volunteer kindly shared: Section G is a very old section. Many, many tombstones are missing, if there were ever any there at all. In the bottom of the photo you should see portions of 3 headstones that are not legible - neither are the 2 large monuments in the background.

According to the Rosehill Cemetery office (8-2020), Mrs Emma Stephani Hautau (daughter of Mrs. Nancy Lederer Stephani) was the "owner of the 4 graves in plot SW quarter, Section G, in or near lot 104." It included Henry Lederer and Mary M Kappes plus Emma's husband Henry Hautau and Emma's. Section G and J are across from each other. Marker was not located for Henry Lederer, though the office says he has (had?) one (see 30 April 2021 photo of grassy area).

Nancy's daughter Bertha (Mrs. Charles F Bieling) was buried at Forest Home Cemetery, also in Chicago.
